Dangote Opens Its Capital to Africans: Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita Supports a Pan-African Shareholding Initiative

Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita Supports a Pan-African Shareholding Initiative

Through the creation of the Friends of Dangote Refinery Shareholders Club, Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita is seeking to raise awareness, provide guidance and help interested Africans better understand how they may participate in the landmark capital-market initiative.

Lagos, Nigeria – Africa. A new chapter in the development of African capital markets is attracting growing attention across the continent. On September 9, Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita launched the Friends of Dangote Refinery Shareholders Club, a civic and pan-African initiative designed to inform, educate and guide individuals interested in understanding the Dangote Refinery share offering.

At the heart of the initiative is the concept of a Public Offering, associated with the listing and opening of part of the company's capital to a wider pool of investors.

Giving Africans the Opportunity to Become Shareholders

In the corporate world, capital is one of the fundamental drivers of business growth. Traditionally, major companies have largely been owned by a relatively limited number of institutional investors and wealthy shareholders.

The opening of part of Dangote Refinery's capital represents, in this context, a significant development: it creates an opportunity for individual investors, subject to the applicable conditions, to participate in the ownership of one of Africa's major industrial enterprises.

According to information communicated in connection with the offering, 4.1 billion shares are being offered at 525 Nigerian naira per share, equivalent to approximately US$0.40. Individual investors may participate from a minimum amount of 10,000 naira, subject to the applicable terms and eligibility requirements.

The offering is scheduled to run from September 14 to October 13.

A Strategic Choice to Finance Expansion

Why choose to open the company's capital rather than rely exclusively on bank financing?

Equity financing allows a company to raise capital through investors rather than relying solely on conventional debt financing, which generally involves repayment of principal and interest.

For Dangote, the transaction forms part of a broader industrial expansion strategy aimed at significantly increasing refining capacity.

The Dangote Refinery ultimately targets a capacity of approximately 1.29 million barrels per day.

The transaction is also expected to place the refinery's value at several tens of billions of dollars, reinforcing its international significance and drawing attention to the development of African capital markets.

“Dangote Is Showing the Way”

For Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita, the significance of the initiative goes beyond the transaction itself.

It raises a broader question about the ability of Africans to participate directly in financing and owning major African companies.

When an African company seeks capital to finance its expansion, traditional approaches often focus on banks and international investors. Opening capital to African investors offers another avenue: mobilising African savings and African capital to support African companies.

This is the spirit behind the creation of the Friends of Dangote Refinery Shareholders Club.

The Club's objective is to contribute to public awareness, improve understanding of share ownership and guide interested individuals toward the appropriate regulated financial institutions and investment channels.

A Vision Developed Over Several Years

The initiative builds on a broader reflection that Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita has pursued for several years.

Five years ago, together with his friend and business associate Paul Vibert, a former banker, they were already examining the future of African economies, the mobilisation of African savings and the development of public offerings for major African companies.

Their vision was to explore African capital markets as a means of strengthening the capitalisation of local companies while giving African citizens the opportunity to participate in their growth.

The Dangote experience now gives concrete expression to that vision.

Rethinking Africa's Place in the Global Economy

The initiative is based on a broader conviction: Africa's economic development cannot rely solely on capital originating outside the continent.

When properly regulated and conducted through authorised financial institutions, the mobilisation of African capital can provide an additional source of financing for African companies.

As Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita puts it:

“Africa has become part of the solution for itself, but also a necessity for the world.”

He further states:

“Africa is not a periphery of the world. It is one of its centres of gravity.”

How Interested Investors Can Seek Guidance

African citizens living outside Nigeria may, subject to eligibility requirements and the applicable terms of the offering, explore investment opportunities in certain Dangote Group companies, including Dangote Cement and, where available to their jurisdiction and investor profile, Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

Through the Friends of Dangote Refinery Shareholders Club, Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita's role is primarily focused on information, advice and guidance.

Individuals interested in exploring participation may therefore be directed toward digital investment platforms or regulated financial intermediaries capable of handling their applications.

Digital Investment Platforms

Daba Finance

Daba Finance is presented as a pan-African investment platform providing access to investment opportunities across African markets. The platform has been associated with Coronation Group in connection with the offering.

MyStocks Africa

Another technology-driven investment platform providing access to listed securities and certain investment opportunities in African markets, subject to eligibility and applicable conditions.

Nigerian Investment Applications

Individuals who already have a Bank Verification Number (BVN) and meet the relevant requirements may also inquire through platforms such as Bamboo, Trove, Chaka or Moniepoint, depending on the services and subscription mechanisms available through each platform.

Using a Regulated Stockbroker

Investors who prefer a traditional financial-market process may approach a stockbroking firm authorised to operate within the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) framework.

Depending on the applicable process, the broker may assist investors with opening an investment account and completing the necessary procedures with the Central Securities Clearing System (CSCS).

Financial institutions cited in connection with the transaction include:

  • Coronation Securities Limited

  • Chapel Hill Denham

  • Stanbic IBTC Stockbrokers

  • Meristem Stockbrokers

Investors Urged to Beware of Unauthorised Intermediaries

The strong interest surrounding the Dangote Refinery offering also calls for increased vigilance.

Investors should be cautious of individuals claiming to represent the offering, requests for payment made through social-media accounts, and platforms that cannot demonstrate the necessary regulatory authorisation.

Before subscribing or transferring funds, investors should verify the identity and regulatory status of the intermediary, review the official offering documentation and understand how their securities will be held.

No investment decision should be made solely on the basis of information circulated through social media or private messaging platforms.

The Friends of Dangote Refinery Shareholders Club

Through the Club, Ambassador Dr Cheick Keita seeks to contribute to a better understanding of share ownership and to facilitate access to financial information for Africans interested in participating in the development of major African companies.

The Club is not intended to replace regulated financial institutions or act as a broker. Its role is to inform, advise and guide interested individuals toward appropriate and authorised channels.

The initiative forms part of a broader vision: making African savings an additional source of financing for African companies and, where regulatory conditions permit, enabling citizens to become stakeholders in the economic development of their own continent.
